I’m back. It’s been a while since I last wrote a blog, though a lot has changed. Now, I was going to write about my labor and delivery experience; however, I was recently listening to a podcast that truly has changed my life. I know that sounds like such a cliché, but it’s true. I’m going to leave the labor and delivery story for another day, and talk about the number one brain doctor, Dr. Daniel Amen. The specific podcast I am referencing is the one that talks about an individual’s brain health. I personally did not realize the true extent of how powerful the brain is until I heard everything Dr. Amen had to say.
I will admit that I found myself at a very low point in my life during postpartum, and it felt as though this podcast came at just the right time. The way we react, our moods, our ambitions, our choices, our daily habits, the way we speak to one another, our internal dialogue, just about everything that makes up who we are and what we do is controlled by the health of our brain. A person can be a certain age while having a brain that is aged 10 years older or the opposite, 10 years younger. Dr. Daniel Amen mentioned that the brains of our children begin to form before conception. Which is totally insane and crazy to think if I do say so myself. Everything we do as individuals can either build our brain health to have a positive effect in our lives or have the opposite effect. Children during the early childhood stage are very susceptible as they learn through imitation most of the time. Everything we do and say as parents or teachers during the first few years are learned, observed, and the imitated by our children. After listening to the podcast, I felt determined to try it out myself. Doesn’t the saying go “it takes 21 days to form a new habit”? Well, I am going to put that to the test.
Throughout the entire podcast, Dr. Daniel Amen spoke a lot about not believing every single thought that crosses our minds. Totally way easier said than done if you ask me, but it’s true and I am determined to switch my mindset over to thinking like this. He focuses processing the thought racing through our brains and answering some questions of how does having this thought make me feel, is this thought 100% true every single time, what is the opposite of this thought, and is the opposite of the thought true most of the time. I don’t know if anyone needed to hear that, but I sure did. As someone who does have anxiety it’s easy to get caught up in every thought that goes through my brain every single time when that shouldn’t be the case.
Sometimes a good refresher of what we may know to be true is a great way to remind ourselves of different ways to work on ourselves for our children and be able to lead by example. Our kids are always watching even when we think they are not. Hopefully this resonated with at least one person reading this. That is my goal! Until next time!
Sincerely,
Mama Bird
